Japan's exports tumbled to log a surprise trade deficit in August, data showed Wednesday, dealing a blow to the struggling economy as the Bank of Japan wraps up its latest meeting.
Japan's exports last month fell 9.6 percent from a year earlier, government data showed, leaving a deficit of 18.7 billion yen ($184 million) compared with a market forecast of around 200 billion yen in surplus.
